14. Software Engineers are Creatives Too!

December 25, 2020

This week our heroes discuss creativity, or the act of creating something new. Computer science often gets a bad rap for being "too technical." How can the entire software team flex their creative muscles?

As software engineers, we’ve likely heard this phrase too often: “Software engineering is too technical for me.” Or “software engineering is too rigid for me.” Or even worse “Software engineering doesn’t allow me to be creative.”

As software engineers, we know that’s a bunch of nonsense!

Creativity is a phenomenon where something new and valuable is formed, according to Wikipedia. While software engineers aren’t designing the interface of the application they build, and they might not be working with typography and color, the field of computer science is full of wonderfully creative individuals with brilliant ideas who are constantly creating something new and something valuable.

As software engineers, we know we’re creative. But the end goal should never be the creative process. The creative process is simply a means to an end. Which, in our case, is the solution to whatever problem our application is meant to solve.
